I had to wait until we moved out of our apartment to tell this story so my mom didn't worry herself sick. Matthew and I have lived in the great Marin City the last two years and we often joked that we lived in the ghetto. Now I hope I don't offend anyone with this story but what can you do. Marin City came to be when the government built some affordable housing units in the area for low-income families. It was all up on the hill behind our complex and I'll be honest, there was a fair amount of hoodlums about at time. They were usually just walking through our complex on their way to here and there and although I never felt in danger we were cautious about going out after dark and such. There were other dental families who had moved out because of experiences they had, bu nothin that concerned me too much. We knew a couple families who lived there for 3 years without incident. I loved my apartment and I really like the area we lived in. We really enjoyed our time living in the Marin City, that is until the last night Matthew spent in that glorious place.
I had been packing and sorting all day and had acquired a large mound of trash. So after I got the boys in bed I wanted to clean things up and asked Matthew to take the trash out with me. He of course was dragging his feet and just wanted to do it in the morning, but I threw a fit and so we loaded up and headed down to the dumpster area. As we walked out our gate we both noticed some young punk walking around the end of the building about 50 m away. No big deal really because we see them a lot at night passing through. Our dumpsters like in most apartment complexes are tucked away in a cinder block area. So we walked in and I threw my bags in and was bossing Matthew around about where to put which bags where as I started walking out. I was startled by someone walking into the area and then even more when they stuck a gun in my face. He was just pointing at me and yelling for me to give him all my money and everything I had. I couldn't believe what was happening. I just kept saying I don't have anything, we're just taking out the trash, all I have is a bag of toothbrushes, you can have my toothbrushes. Matthew was kind of around the corner a bit from him and couldn't see the second kid walk in, but heard him join with the other guy in asking for everything we had. Obviously they didn't care what we were doing so Matthew just took out his wallet and gave it to him and they took off. I wasn't thinking to clearly I suppose. I see two boys with a gun mugging people and I just want lecture them about how this was not how they should behaving. In fact when they ran out I started to follow them because I didn't want them to have Matthew's wallet and I wanted to get it back. Matthew who was thinking a little more clearly and knew that some young kid with a gun shoving it in to people's faces is not rational and could easily do something very stupid whether he meant to or not. So he pulled me back in until they were gone. Once we got up to the apartment it all kind of sunk in and I started to freak out a bit as I called the cops. They of course have several units near by and responded right away. We told the police officer what happened and tried to describe the boys, but all we could say was a black kid in a big black hoodie with dark jeans and a gun. The second guy wasn't much different except with a different jacket. So I got in the car with the officer and he drove me down to the area that the kids hang out at night. That was almost as scary. They call it the 200 circle and it's just a parking lot by some of the low-income housing. There were about 8 black kids in black hoodies and dark jeans among the 30 or so kids there. We drove through the area real slow and I got to hear all their smart remarks about the white girl and the cop as I tried to pick the attackers. I of course couldn't pick out the kids and most likely they weren't there. So we went back home and finished our reports and cancelled all of our cards. I sure hope those 2 were happy with the $12 they got. Matthew was concerned because he was flying out the next morning for some job interviews in Boise and his drivers licesnse was out there with our home address on it. Everything was fine though and the last few days were just like all the others, but I'll be honest it sure left a bad taste in my mouth. Nobody likes to have a gun in their face. I guess I can still say that our time in Marin City was pretty good, but I'm sure glad we don't have to live there any longer.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT! Oh how scary!!! Our van got broken in the last night we were in the presidio. They stole Toms back pack with his ipod, laptop, PDA and all of his applications for his idaho dental license. So glad you are safe. BUT so sad you are not going to be close! How did you find a job in Oregon? I bet you will like it and not far from home!

Oh my gosh.... I am sorry! You brave girl. I am GLAD you are safe. That is most important.
Yikes! Glad you are both okay. That takes "lgoing out with a bang" to a whole new level!
Good luck in Oregon! I've always wanted to live there, but never will. I think we are fated to be Californians for the rest of our lives.
Bethany, when Mick got Matthew's text mssg the next morning, I cried. I was so sad to think of you, my friend!, held at gunpoint with your husband, my friend!, having to witness it. Yuck, yuck, yuck.
So glad you're ok. And, let's just say, I'm NOT looking forward to packing up MY apartment and taking trips to the dumpster before our Ridgeway move in a couple weeks.
xo, Anj
I can't believe that! So glad to hear those hoodlums left with the wallet and didn't ask for more trouble.
Yikers!!!!! Glad you are safe and you don't have to live there anymore either! Cool to be in Oregon!!!! Yahoo for a new adventure!
Holy crap, Bethany! That could have been sooo much worse. Good thing Matthew was there. That's the craziest story ever. Move to Prosper, TX ... that stuff doesn't happen here. lol.
Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you guys are safe. That story is hilarious and extremely frightening... Sounds like what I would done. What a pain, but it sounds like you got it all worked out,and at least you don't have to worry about drama like that anymore :) YAY!
I am SOOOOOO glad you two are OK. How scarey is that? Thanks for the post - where are you off to????? MISS YOU GUYS!!!
Holy Cow!!! That's so scary. I'm glad you're OK. And I'm glad you're getting the heck out. Good luck in Oregon!
Wow, Bethany and Matt, so glad that this didn't go south on you. That just leaves you feeling so sad and mad and violated, it is just the worst thing. I have had a couple of such events in my life. It always leaves a lot of residual anger and resentment buried surprisingly deep, and it can take some time and effort to overcome -- at least it did for me. Just glad you are well and out of there.
Where in Oregon are you headed, by the way? We have been in the throws of redecorating and painting our whole house, and have not had the time to check up. Let us know, will you?
We haven't heard from you guys. We hope Evan had a happy B-day and that you had some success rental hunting in Portland. We need to see you before you leave for good.
Scary, Good thing Matthew was thinking rationally! Going after them would not have been a good idea. We were really relieved to hear that nothing else happened, I hope they can't do anything with his license. I can see why your mom would be worried. Oregon huh? No luck in Boise, Dang! I was hoping you guys would be closer. Are you coming to the reunion? I know I probably already asked you that but if you are I can't wait to see you.
I can just see you getting all fiesty bethany! I'm glad you are all safe. Ben talks about Evan all the time. Tell evan Ben says hi. Congrats on the job.
Oh my goodness bethany! That is so darn scary! I can't believe that actually happened to you. Way to save the day with your wallet matt! Love you guys. love megs
Oh my heavens Bethany! That story is unbelievable! I am so glad that nothing bad happened. I can't believe you had a gun pointed in your face. Nothing like a hijacking to help you say goodbye to a place!
We went to Stinson beach a week ago and it just felt wrong that you guys were no longer in Sasalito. I miss you all, but Dallin really touched my heart this last visit. He almost sings when he speaks he puts so much expression in the words. Can't wait to see your next blog from Hillsboro.
I keep waiting for the next update, B! Throw me a bone here!
Soon to be in Ashland,
Anj
You guys should have stayed in Utah with the coolest ex roomate that you ever had. Now that you have leaned your lesson you can move back here but we can't be roomates again sorry.
Nate commented (not much has changed there...), so now I will. I was so glad to come across your blog! Your family is beautiful, and seems to be doing really well. If you are ever in Utah it would be great to see you all. Our blog is nathanmcarthurfamily.blogspot.com, or you can just click on our name...yeah, that would be easier.
